In the summer of 2002 I spent a week in and around Santa Fe. New Mexico, and fell in love with the magical landscape. Although I had been an art major at Birmingham Southern, I had hardly painted at all in probably 30 years. I made a feeble attempt at a couple of landscapes after I came home, but eventually quit, and threw them away.
After a couple of additional trips, and some long conversations with a psychologist, I suddenly felt like painting again, and decided to test the waters again with the painting at the bottom of the last page, a view of the trail back down from a hike up Chimney Rock at Ghost Ranch, the Summer stamping ground of Georgia O'Keeffe. On the left is Kitchen Mesa, and across the Abiquiu Reservoir you can see the Pedernal, the flat-topped Mesa that O'Keeffe said God had promised to give her if she painted it enough. Apparently God changed His mind, because it's still there, working its magic and waiting for people like me to have a go at it.
The Pedernal is visible rising over the landscape from a great many places--even at a great distance on the High Road to Taos-- looking the same, but different in each view. I have painted it several times, and plan to keep tackling it.
